This is a list of messages created after the installation of the MediaWiki namespace. Original messages can be found at MediaWiki interface messages. Other includable elements are listed on MediaWiki custom elements. Read more about the MediaWiki namespace. See also Wikipedia:Topics

Instructions

In order to create a new custom message, simply create a page in the MediaWiki namespace, named "MediaWiki:", followed by a name for the message, that contains the text of the message. Names cannot contain spaces and initial case is irrelevant. To create such a page, like any other page, create a link something like [[MediaWiki:mymessage]] and then click on it. You may want to consider protecting the messages you create (if you have administrator privileges), but see the talk page for a discussion of this. Please list any custom messages you create on this page.

There are two major ways to include custom messages, subst and msg. subst makes a copy of the message text and places it where you put the tag after you save an article (substitution), msg loads the message and puts it on the page every time you load it (transclusion).

In other words, when the message is updated, you do not need to update a page that uses it if you use msg. As a guideline, short, temporal messages that will be removed soon should be copied using subst (which has the advantage of showing the message in the wiki source), and standard notices that might remain on a page for months or forever should be transcluded for easy updating. (You should not use msg for a message which contain any links which may change in the future. This method doesn't refresh "What links here" unless every article containing the msg get changed after the modification of the link in the message.)

For convenient editing of the custom message from a page on which it is used you can include in the custom message a link to edit itself, see e.g. the navigational box at Train.

When you add new MediaWiki custom messages, please help keep the table in alphabetical order.

Redirect pages

One or several to be placed at the bottom of a redirect page. This doesn't prevent the redirect from working.

Name Current text
{{msg:R from abbreviation}}
Talk
  • From an abbreviation: This is a redirect from an abbreviation to a related topic, such as the expansion of the abbreviation.
    • Instead of this template, use {{R from acronym}} for acronyms pronounced as words, such as NATO and RADAR; or
    • Use {{R from initialism}} for those pronounced as letters, such as CIA and HIV; or
    • Use {{R from short name}}, instead, for the initials of a person's name, and other shortenings not typically classed as abbreviations.
{{msg:R_from_misspelling}}
Talk
{{msg:R_for_alternate_capitalisation}}
Talk
  • From other capitalisation: This is a redirect from a title with another method of capitalisation. It leads to the title in accordance with the Wikipedia naming conventions for capitalisation, or it leads to a title that is associated in some way with the conventional capitalisation of this redirect title. This may help writing, searching and international language issues.
    • If this redirect is an incorrect capitalisation, then {{R from miscapitalisation}} should be used instead, and pages that use this link should be updated to link directly to the target. Miscapitalisations can be tagged in any namespace.
    • Use this rcat to tag only mainspace redirects; when other capitalisations are in other namespaces, use {{R from modification}} instead.
{{msg:R_with_possibilities}}
Talk
  • With possibilities: This is a redirect from a title that potentially could be expanded into a new article or other type of associated page such as a new template. The topic described by this title may be more detailed than is currently provided on the target page or in a section of that page.
    • {{R printworthy}} should be used together with this template when applied to a redirect in mainspace.
    • When used on a template redirect, it will automatically populate Category:Template redirects with possibilities.
    • When the target page becomes too large, or for any reason a new page would be an improvement, this redirect may be replaced with an article, template or other project page that is carved out of the target page. See also {{R to section}} and use together with this rcat when appropriate.
    • If the topic of the redirect is not susceptible to expansion, then use other rcats such as {{R to section}} or {{R to list entry}} when appropriate.
    • Since a new page may be created, links to this redirect should not be replaced with a direct link to the target page.
{{msg:R_to_sort_name}}
Talk
Template:R to sort name
{{msg:R_from_CamelCase}}
Talk
  • From a camel case title: This is a redirect from a camel case page name. In the initial versions of Wikipedia, all links had to be "CamelCase", i.e., words that used medial capitals; they are "two-humped" like a Bactrian camel. These are kept as redirects to maintain edit history and to avoid breaking links that may have been made externally.

Investigation of potential copyright issue

Please note this is about the text of this Wikipedia article; it should not be taken to reflect on the subject of this article.

Do not restore or edit the blanked content on this page until the issue is resolved by an administrator, copyright clerk or OTRS agent.

If you have just labeled this page as a potential copyright issue, please follow the instructions for filing at the bottom of the box.

The previous content of this page or section has been identified as posing a potential copyright issue, as a copy or modification of the text from the source(s) below, and is now listed at Copyright problems (listing):

Unless the copyright status of the text of this page or section is clarified and determined to be compatible with Wikipedia's content license, the problematic text and revisions or the entire page may be deleted one week after the time of its listing (i.e. after 02:43, 30 September 2021 (UTC)).

Temporarily, the original posting is still accessible for viewing in the page history.

Can you help resolve this issue?
If you hold the copyright to this text, you can license it in a manner that allows its use on Wikipedia. Click "Show" to see how.
  1. You must permit the use of your material under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 Unported License (CC BY-SA 3.0) and the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts).
  2. Explain your intent to license the content on this article's discussion page.
  3. To confirm your permission, you can either display a notice to this effect at the site of original publication or send an e-mail from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org or a postal letter to the Wikimedia Foundation. These messages must explicitly permit use under CC BY-SA and the GFDL. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  4. Note that articles on Wikipedia must be written from a neutral point of view and must be verifiable in published third-party sources; consider whether, copyright issues aside, your text is appropriate for inclusion in Wikipedia.
You can demonstrate that this text is in the public domain or is already under a license suitable for Wikipedia. Click "Show" to see how.
Explain this on this article's discussion page, with reference to evidence. Wikipedia:Public domain and Wikipedia:Compatibly licensed may assist in determining the status.
Otherwise, you may rewrite this page without copyright-infringing material. Click "Show" to read where and how.

Your rewrite should be placed on this page, where it will be available for an administrator or clerk to review it at the end of the listing period. Follow this link to create the temporary subpage.

  • Simply modifying copyrighted text is not sufficient to avoid copyright infringement—if the original copyright violation cannot be cleanly removed or the article reverted to a prior version, it is best to write the article from scratch. (See Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing.)
  • For license compliance, any content used from the original article must be properly attributed; if you use content from the original, please leave a note at the top of your rewrite saying as much. You may duplicate non-infringing text that you had contributed yourself.
  • It is always a good idea, if rewriting, to identify the point where the copyrighted content was imported to Wikipedia and to check to make sure that the contributor did not add content imported from other sources. When closing investigations, clerks and administrators may find other copyright problems than the one identified. If this material is in the proposed rewrite and cannot be easily removed, the rewrite may not be usable.
State that you have created a rewrite on this article's discussion page.
About importing text to Wikipedia
  • Posting copyrighted material without the express permission of the copyright holder is considered copyright infringement, which is both illegal and against Wikipedia policy.
  • If you have express permission, this must be verified either by explicit release at the source or by e-mail or letter to the Wikimedia Foundation. See Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries.
  • Policy requires that we block those who repeatedly post copyrighted material without express permission.
Instructions for filing

If you have tagged the article for investigation, please complete the following steps:

  • Add the following to the bottom of Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2021 September 23:
    * {{subst:article-cv|Wikipedia:Template index}} from . ~~~~
  • Place this notice on the talk page of the contributor of the copyrighted material:
    {{subst:Nothanks-web|pg=Wikipedia:Template index|url=}} ~~~~
  • To hide a section instead of an entire article, add the template to the beginning of the section and {{Copyvio/bottom}} at the end of the portion you intend to blank.

The Tales of Hoffmann
The Tales of Hoffmann (Les contes d'Hoffmann) is an opéra fantastique by Jacques Offenbach. The French libretto was written by Jules Barbier based on three short stories by E. T. A. Hoffmann, who is the opera's protagonist. It was Offenbach's final work; he died in October 1880, four months before the premiere at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. This illustration, probably by Pierre-Auguste Lamy, shows the third act, set in Venice, as illustrated for the first production of the opera in 1881. This act was in fact omitted from the premiere performance itself, the orchestration being incomplete at the time of the composer's death.Illustration credit: Pierre-Auguste Lamy (attributed); restored by Adam Cuerden
