Detect cross-wiki uploads[edit]

I would like to ask if it is possible for bots to detect and categorize cross-wiki uploads? Recently I noticed that there are quite a big amount of copyvio files (mostly pics of celebrities) which were cross-uploaded from vi.wikipedia. While I managed to find some of them, it's impossible to recognize them all as most of these files are either uncategorized or have meaningless names such as File:Z2511652560434 ffa39a0605517c7c8d0be79a8be03d6e.jpg. — LX | Talk 22:55, 31 July 2021 (UTC)

Hi User:Lệ Xuân, Special:AbuseFilter/153 was created for to stop this type of upload. If you enable the cross-wiki filter Special:Tags at Special:RecentChanges you can find them by the upload summary. For example the latest is File:Dongminhtran.jpg.--BevinKacon (talk) 10:52, 28 August 2021 (UTC)
I followed your instruction. Still looking at those upload summaries is a bit overwhelming to me 'cause I just want to see the uploads from vi.wikipedia and nothing more. We don't have specific categories for different wikis (such as Cross-wiki uploads from nl.wikipedia, Cross-wiki uploads from pt.wikipedia... and so on)? — Băng Tỏa (talk) 23:53, 1 September 2021 (UTC)

Technical Improvements per Result of COM:VPP#Leveled Warning Templates for Copyright Violations?[edit]

As per the result on COM:VPP#Leveled Warning Templates for Copyright Violations?, I have distilled several improvements for the process of copyright inspection. As a result, I'm asking if someone can help with some technical edits:

  1. Categorize files tagged with {{Copyvio}} without a link into another category (eg. Category:Copyright violations without sources given) to attract extra attention of processing administrators, to alert administrators of possible bad speedy deletions.
  2. Include File:Freedom of Panorama world map.svg and its explanation on the tutorial page of Special:UploadWizard, to give a better understanding on what images of buildings and artworks can be uploaded to Commons or not.

I'll be grateful to anyone who can help with implementing these edits, thanks!廣九直通車 (talk) 11:50, 21 August 2021 (UTC)

Temporary option for uploading large files[edit]

Hello dear community,

since uploading files between about 600 MiB and 4 GiB is still not possible via the typical upload options, I would like to ask if it is possible to set up a toolforge tool that can do just that?

Or is it even foreseeable if the problem will be fixed?

Thanks and greetings, --PantheraLeo1359531 😺 (talk) 16:32, 24 August 2021 (UTC)

Read-only reminder[edit]

A maintenance operation will be performed on Wednesday August 25 06:00 UTC. It should only last for a few minutes.

Also during this time, operations on the CentralAuth will not be possible (GlobalRenames, changing/confirming e-mail addresses, logging into new wikis, password changes).

For more details about the operation and on all impacted services, please check on Phabricator.

A banner will be displayed 30 minutes before the operation.

Please help your community to be aware of this maintenance operation. Thank you!

Template:Jaworzno by century[edit]

I have problem with this template - I can't remowe this data Category:Jaworzno in the 21st century|21st century from template. Identical Template:Kościerzyna by century doesn't show it. I can't solve the problem. Additionally I ask about repair this template - Template:PolandVoivodeshipyear. --Choojvdoopie (talk) 19:15, 26 August 2021 (UTC)

This date - [[Category:{{{1}}}{{{2}}} in Poland| voivodeship]] is seen in Template:PolandVoivodeshipyear. I cant't make this data unseen.--Choojvdoopie (talk) 22:56, 26 August 2021 (UTC)

Cannot the thumbnail of a video file be changed?[edit]

I have uploaded this webm video, but I don't like the default thumbnail because it hardly represents the whole clip. Even though it can be linked with a particular keyframe by inserting the parameter thumbtime= as

, I like it better if it's always with a selected keyframe even when browsing a commons category. Couldn't somebody develop such a function? --トトト (talk) 22:11, 26 August 2021 (UTC)

Stash has not uploaded for days[edit]

I have tried to upload from my stash over and over again. One time, the video just disappeared from my stash (without uploading to the file name) and I uploaded it again using a chunked upload and it again got stuck in my stash. Can someone help? Does anyone have access to the servers? Do I need to make a ticket at phab:? —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:52, 3 September 2021 (UTC)

And now the file has disappeared from my stash again without uploading. Please help. —Justin (koavf)TCM 17:04, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
Koavf - Chunked upload has always been a life saver for me so not sure why it hasn't been for you :(, If you want I can upload it for you?, failing that personally I have no better suggestions other than Chunked which you've already tried, –Davey2010Talk 18:02, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
@Davey2010: That would be a treat. I've tried using Video2Commons and downloading, converting via Handbrake, and uploading with ChunkedUploads for File:David Pakman - Politics, Media and Reality Tunnels.webm. What do you suggest to make this work? Is there something about Video2Commons that is broken on my end (maybe uMatrix or NoScript is blocking a feature somehow???). I also have two very large videos on X3D that I want to upload but I don't want to go thru this indefinitely. —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:06, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
Koavf, Unfortunately I don't know what causes V2C not to work - it seems to pick and choose what it wants to convert,
I downloaded the video and converted it which took minutes, Used V2C to upload the file but that alone took 2-3 hours and I wasn't getting no where (only got to 2%!) - So I've used an online WEBM converter which generally produces crap results but unfortunately it looks like it's the best we're gonna get (unless someone wants to retry uploading a webm version to V2C and waiting 2-3 days!).
Sorry I couldn't do better here, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 20:55, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
@Davey2010: I'm always grateful for someone trying. I actually didn't realize that you could upload to Video2Commons and then that can publish here, so maybe I'll try that. I'm loathe to open up a new phab: ticket but I guess I have to if this new method doesn't work. Thanks again. :/ —Justin (koavf)TCM 20:58, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
Koavf Ignore the above reply, I originally tried uploading to V2C via URL which failed, So I downloaded the file as MP4 and tried uploading to V2C that way however 3 hours later it was only at 2% .... so I then tried an online MP4 to WEBM conversion service which when uploaded here turned out to be an audio only file ..... so as a last ditch attempt I tried converting from MP4 to WEMB on a different site but unfortunately that site now says "time limit exceeded" .....
TLDR I've tried 4 different options and none have successfully worked so I would unfortunately suggest heading to Phab and see if something can be fixed
Sorrry again for not being able to be of any help :(, Hope one way or another you have some luck with this file, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 00:48, 7 September 2021 (UTC)
@Koavf: server side uploading has been the only way I could get a some files uploaded recently. Large file uploads have been very unreliable for a few months now. Using upload Wizard, API chunked and async uploads, chunked upload JS are all the same. It's also causing semi-regular failures of the IA upload tool. Inductiveload (talk) 22:12, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
@Inductiveload: So that means a ticket, then? —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:25, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
@Koavf: I'm afraid so. Or at least that is what it took for me. Inductiveload (talk) 22:31, 7 September 2021 (UTC)
@Davey2010: You've done lots. Thanks! —Justin (koavf)TCM 01:29, 7 September 2021 (UTC)

EditGroups tool for Commons[edit]

Perhaps some of you who also edit Wikidata are familiar with the EditGroups tool, which lets people review and revert batches of edits on Wikidata. (For instance, this batch was reverted by this batch). I am planning to deploy this tool for Commons too (for context: I am involved in a project to add support for Commons to OpenRefine and we need to be able to revert edit batches as part of that). Therefore I have a few questions:

  • Would there be tool authors who would be interested in trying this out, by adapting their tool so that their edits are tracked by EditGroups (and therefore their batches could be reverted easily)?
  • In which namespaces should the tool be tracking edits? I am thinking of File: (namespace 6) only (for comparison in Wikidata we only track edits on items and properties, namespaces 0 and 120 respectively)
  • To revert batches which contain page creations (so, file uploads), admin rights are required. Admins can do that via EditGroups and granting the tool permissions to do the deletions on their behalf. If a non-admin visits the tool, there is a button to undo the batch, which redirects them to a prefilled new section in d:Wikidata:Requests_for_deletions (for instance, try reverting this batch without logging into EditGroups. Of course don't save the page on Wikidata…). Because Commons does not seem to have one single page where requests should be added, I wonder how to do it here? Perhaps we could create a special page for batch deletion requests? What would be a good title for it?
  • The on-wiki support for those features relies on some help pages, templates and prefills such as d:Wikidata:Edit_groups, d:Template:Edit_group_box, d:Template:Edit_group, d:Wikidata:Edit_groups/Preload and d:Wikidata:Edit_groups/Revert. Is it okay if I create the same sorts of things here in the "Commons:" namespace? The tool also invites users to discuss batches on specific pages such as d:Wikidata:Edit_groups/OR/8cb3004, we could have this here or simply redirect to the batch author's talk page.

This external tool is not really a satisfactory solution for this problem, ideally this should be supported on MediaWiki's side (see phab:T203557) but there is no sign of that happening any time soon, hence this initiative.

Let me know what you think! − Pintoch (talk) 16:44, 12 September 2021 (UTC)

I have boldly created Commons:Edit groups and the subpage Commons:Edit groups/Adding a tool, but very happy to have them somewhere else (or deleted you think this should rather be off-wiki). And I have deployed an instance of the tool here: − Pintoch (talk) 13:37, 13 September 2021 (UTC)

CSS changes might affect scripts[edit]

Hi all,

I don't fully understand this potential problem, but the part that I grasped is that there's going to be a change that might affect some user scripts/gadgets that depend on something in the CSS. This will probably appear here at Commons next Wednesday (i.e., seven days from now).

This change was made months ago at three Wikipedias, and they're still around, so I assume that the overall risk is fairly low. On the other hand, there are more user scripts and gadgets at Commons than most wikis, so perhaps the risk is higher here. My main goal in posting this is to let you know that if a gadget breaks next Thursday, that you'll consider these CSS changes as a possible source of the problem.

Thanks, Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 17:51, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

I added some technical details to the linked task. These are the same changes that are currently applied when you enable the "Discussion tools" beta feature, so you can test today whether your scripts/gadgets work fine with that. We're not actually expecthing anything to break (but you never know…). Matma Rex (talk) 19:00, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

The Mobile version of the MediaWiki Upload Wizard is acting weird[edit]

For whatever reason the Mobile version of the MediaWiki Upload Wizard looks really weird and everything now looks HUGE. Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

@Donald Trung: This should be related to Special:Permalink/591517076#Upload wizard mobile ui CSS fix 2, but I don't see any problems in my mobile phone (Android, Chrome). cc @Zache: 4nn1l2 (talk) 20:43, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
@Donald Trung: can you take screenshot? --Zache (talk) 20:45, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
Also, can you give details on which browser / device the problem is happening so I can try the issue. --Zache (talk) 20:51, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

@Zache:, Here are the issues I'm facing. Some objects appear waaaaaayyyyyy too big while others are really narrow. The thumbnails and most boxes are too big, the "6 (six) steps" appear as a weird bug, well, most of these screenshots speak for themselves. I'm using Microsoft Edge on a Microsoft Lumia 950 mobile telephone with Microsoft Windows 10 Mobile. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 21:00, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

Thanks! I will try to figure out how to fix the css rules. Btw, You can disable the change from settings / gadgets (search label Toggles mobile UploadWizard to responsive layout) --Zache (talk) 21:08, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
I updated the CSS rules in beta commons diff. @Donald Trung: I will still do a testing round with different devices, but if you want to test the beta commons upload wizard now it would be nice and drop comments if there is something more to fix. (Note: I don't have Windows mobile phone and my testing was with Internet explorer. I think however that I found errors described in your screenshots) --Zache (talk) 06:11, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
@Zache:, all issues there are fixed. 😃 Thank you very much for investing your free time in this. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 07:17, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
Thank you. Also just for transparency, I work as a part timer in Wikimedia Finland and we are doing project Helsinki rephotographs which try to inspire people to do casual exercises and also take photos and publish them via free licenses. Our method is to inspire people to go out and take photos from defined targets (mostly rephotos, but also sites under change). In any case, it seemed to be good idea that UploadWizard would work with mobile devices too so that we can have single link for uploading photos. In any case the CSS-rules from beta are now here too. --Zache (talk) 13:50, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
@Zache:, I just saw that I forgot to report back, but all the issues are resolved. I would be lying that I would say that I don't miss some parts of how it looked a fortnight ago, but overall this new layout is an improvement and the "nostalgia" is probably just my brain needing to get used to it (which usually takes a couple of days), I can't say that I've had any issues with it since your fixes. Thank you so much for all your hard work. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 11:17, 20 September 2021 (UTC)

Image thumbnail over 100 MP error[edit]

Hi! The image File:Hayden Bridge, Spanning McKenzie River at Southern Pacific Railroad (moved from Springfield, Lake County, OR), Springfield, Lane County, OR HAER ORE,20-SPRIF,2- (sheet 3 of 4).png on the Wikipedia page Hayden Bridge (Springfield, Oregon) is having issues with displaying. The error text says that this is because it is over 100 MP. Could someone help me with this? Thanks! Tyrone Madera (talk) 21:50, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

@Tyrone Madera: That's phab:T291010. We tried to remove some technical debt (in the form of an extension that shouldn't be doing much of anything), but it ended up being load-bearing technical debt. That change has been reverted for now, so purging any pages that are still affected should fix them. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 23:32, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

Auto translate[edit]

I have tried leaving a warning message at User talk:Houssam BH to advise the user not to remove deletion notices, as was done at File:National Rally of Independents.jpg. However, instead of the expected message, I see, "Template:Autotranslate". The template text appears to have been inserted correctly,[12] so I am not sure what the problem is. It could just be a temporary glitch and the template text may become visible later on its own but I thought I'd mention it in case some corrective action is needed. From Hill To Shore (talk) 22:35, 17 September 2021 (UTC)

This happens when a user talk page contains too many templates and the Mediawiki software can no longer parse additional templates on that page. Anyhow, the user should have gotten a notification about the edit at their talk page, so there is no need to fix any code. De728631 (talk) 22:41, 17 September 2021 (UTC)

"File extension ".jpg" does not match the detected MIME type of the file (image/png)."[edit]

I keep getting this error message while trying to upload an image, the device I use is :

  • Installed RAM 8,00 GB (7,70 GB usable)
  • System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
  • Pen and touch No pen or touch input is available for this display

(Usually I'm on mobile and I've never had this issue on a mobile device.).

Is this a common issue? --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 11:14, 20 September 2021 (UTC)
