Suggestion to create a new featured category - 'Featured gallery'[edit]

I'd like to suggest that a new category be created. This may help raise the standard of the presentation/the arrangement of galleries, the selection of images to be included and the informative descriptions of included images, etc. Example: Herrgottskirche (Creglingen)). In additions, it may indirectly influence the way pictures are taken so they can be selected and create a nicely layout gallery. Thx Mattis (talk) 16:38, 11 September 2021 (UTC)

Changing the file type[edit]

Regarding the page File:UNESCO pdf.pdf, I have scaled it to the correct proportions and cropped it as a jpg file. When I tried to upload the corrected version, I couldn't do it because the file types didn't match. I ended up converting the jpg to pdf and uploaded it, but I'd rather have been able to change the file type. How would that be done? Upload it as a new file and then have an administrator merge it? Redirect the old file to the new file? ~Anachronist (talk) 16:53, 8 September 2021 (UTC)

You should upload it as a jpg file. Ruslik (talk) 20:52, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
@Ruslik0: That doesn't answer my question. The only way I could upload it as a jpg file is to create a new page. I am trying to update the image in an existing page, and I wasn't able to upload it as a jpg because the previous file type was pdf. So although I've already updated it by uploading a new pdf, my question is how would one normally change the file type of an existing file. Create a new page and merge or redirect the old one? ~Anachronist (talk) 21:50, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
You cannot change the file type for an existing file. If you want to upload a different file type, please upload a new file with another type extension. De728631 (talk) 22:24, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
I didn't want to upload a new file, because the image isn't mine, and I didn't want it counted among my page creations. All I did was correct errors in the existing file. But if it isn't possible, that's all I needed to know. ~Anachronist (talk) 23:08, 8 September 2021 (UTC)

TOO high of resolution? Kepler's platonic solids[edit]

Hi, I work in an academic library. We recently scanned and uploaded File:Kepler Platonic Solids.tif at a very high resolution. I tried putting it on the enwiki Mysterium Cosmographicum, but it took so long to load that I don't know if it was adding value to the page. Should I upload a lower-resolution version for ease of use? Leave the existing page as-is? Thank you, Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 17:25, 8 September 2021 (UTC)

  • .TIFF is always a bulky format. It's typical that archives and libraries who have resources justifying its use on quality grounds (this would qualify) will often upload two versions, a TIFF and also a JPG. For most uses, the JPG does the job more easily.
That said, this is a MediaWiki site. MediaWiki will itself convert pretty well from TIFF to JPG and so in use on pages, there's no real need to do this manually. Andy Dingley (talk) 17:55, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
@Rachel Helps (BYU): MediaWiki caches scaled-down versions of pictures, so while a page might load slowly the first time as MediaWiki generates the scaled-down version, it should be fine for everyone thereafter. The general rule on Wikimedia projects is that editors shouldn't worry about performance. If MediaWiki is slow at displaying thumbnails from large TIFFs, the Wikimedia Foundation pays people to make it faster. --bjh21 (talk) 11:04, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
That is very helpful to know. I'll put in the new image then. Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 16:22, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

Using an image in article, that has not been previously published but has not been made by the user[edit]

Hi everyone,

For an article I am drafting, I would like to use a diagram created by my boss and which has not been created by myself. The diagram has not been published online or in print previously and I have been given express permission by him to use it. How do I upload this to my article, whilst citing that he made the original diagram?

Thanks in advance — Preceding unsigned comment added by NablaUltima (talk • contribs) 09:41, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

please follow with your boss the procedure of COM:VRT. Your boss can give permission to publish the diagram by email. Elly (talk) 11:12, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
Or your boss can create an account just to upload the diagram and issue a license, or can publish it with an appropriate license on a web site clearly under his control. - Jmabel ! talk 15:24, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

What else is necessary to make my uploaded image legit?[edit]

Recently I improperly uploaded an image I named: Jack Orrison The Plainclothesman.jpg I thought that I could use a pre-1926 photo for educational purposes under "fair use" but I've been informed my upload will be deleted due to copyright restrictions. I do not want to go against copyright laws, and have been trying to obtain a licensing agreement for the Jack Orrison photo.

The photo appears in a research book (The Forgotten Network, published by Temple University Press), and the source of the photo is Photofest. I researched Photofest, and it appears to be a legit organization, so I emailed them asking about paying a fee so that the photo can be used in two Wikipedia articles. Here is part of their reply to me:

We supply images for editorial use only. Most of our images are publicity stills and can be used for editorial use without further permissions. Under "fair use". Wikipedia is completely editorial in nature, so no further permissions would be needed. Furthermore, the owner of Photofest provided this additional information. "The Dumont Network closed down in 1956. TV publicity photographs were not copyrighted, so there is no reason to believe that there is any limitation imposed on our image. It is in the public domain"

Seems wonderful, but I realize that is just what I was told by the accounting department of an organization that provides classic entertainment photos, and Wikimedia Commons has very strict rules to avoid any copyright violations. If I officially obtained the right to download this photo from Photofest, and I did a second upload of this photo, stating that DuMont's TV publicity photos were not copyrighted, I fear that I'd be told that wasn't good enough.

What is necessary for me to legally keep this photo in Wikimedia Commons? Karenthewriter (talk) 02:02, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

  • Convenience link: File:Jack Orrison The Plainclothesman.jpg - Jmabel ! talk 04:52, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
  • @Karenthewriter: Commons accepts only images that are either public domain or offer a rather liberal free license. In particular, Commons does not allow images that are uploaded only on a fair use basis. FWIW: although it appears not to be relevant to this particular case, unlike Commons, the English-language Wikipedia does allow certain images to be uploaded on a fair use basis. See en:Wikipedia:Non-free use. That would require uploading directly to the English-language Wikipedia and does not involve Commons at all.
  • Most likely from what you've said, this is public domain on the basis of {{PD-US-no notice}}, which appears to be its current tag. I'd also put the information from Photofest into the "Permission" field of the {{Information}} template. The statement there now, "fair use for educational purposes" makes no sense at all if the image is PD.
  • If the image is indeed PD, you don't need to "officially obtain" any right. If it's PD, any sale of a copy is strictly a convenience. They can't sell you rights they don't own, and "public domain" means precisely that no one has any more legal claim to ownership than anyone else.
  • I converted {{No permission since}} to a normal deletion discussion at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Jack Orrison The Plainclothesman.jpg. You should probably make your justification there for keeping it. Jmabel ! talk 05:10, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Olkko (talk • contribs) 08:10, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

Photo description

Good day. Uploading photos to the contest Wiki loves sights through the contest list, in the gallery to each individual object. But in the category column, although it defines correctly, highlights in red and writes that one of the categories does not have a description page. Am I sure I entered the name correctly? Then, accordingly, I can end the action if I agree to ignore.

Which graph is meant? As if everything is filled in automatically.

Pretty sure it’s Ukrainian … anyway the question seems to be about a non-existent “Jewish Heritage“ cat that the WLM wizard added (per a menu choice?) to Olkko’s uploads (among many other users’—I found it well populated); I guess it to be some kind of special theme for this years’s contest. Publishing my work[edit]

I have already registered in wiki loves monuments competition but I don't know Where to publish my work. — Preceding unsigned comment added by An onymous.23218 (talk • contribs) 08:55, 11 September 2021 (UTC)

@An onymous.23218: the page where you “registered” is for organizers, not general participants. But if you go to the India entry in the table there you will find links to the list of monuments and for uploading. (I suggest you use the former at first, because I believe more of the info will get filled in for you by the upload wizard.) If you have pictures from another country, use a link from beside its name there: entries are grouped by the subject country, not the photographer’s nationality. Anyway, if you use the appropriate campaign-specific upload wizard, those photos will be categorized as contest entries automatically; no additional ‘paperwork’ should be necessary.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:32, 12 September 2021 (UTC)

Yes, you can. At least this is highly likely. You can use {{Pd-old-70}} or similar tag on it. Ruslik (talk) 20:50, 12 September 2021 (UTC)
{{PD-old-70}} is not acceptable as a sole license for anything; as it says "You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States." For any thing published before 1926 in the US that you don't know the death year on, use {{ PD-US-expiredcountry = US }}. If it's more than 120 years old, use {{PD-old-assumed-expired}}.
There's no reason not to include a US license on a work published more than 95 years ago, as that's clearly PD-US-expired (or PD-old-auto-expired, in most cases where it's PD in its home, non-US, country.)--Prosfilaes (talk) 23:59, 12 September 2021 (UTC)

Why is this public domain? It looks unpublished to me--the library has the negative--and hence under copyright for 70 years from the death of the author; looking at birth year, and File:Alan Tower Waterman.jpg (presumably taken as NSF and hence no earlier than 1951) I think it safe to say this photo was taken no earlier than 1951, and thus exceedingly unlikely to be out of copyright under life+70; for all we know, the photographer could be alive.--Prosfilaes (talk) 00:05, 13 September 2021 (UTC)

File:Monotype font samples.png broken by some kind of change?[edit]

Not sure where the right page to ask/post this is but I noticed File:Monotype font samples.png does not render with the error message "Error creating thumbnail: File with dimensions greater than 100 MP". Since I assume that the file did work at some point, there seems to have happened some kind of change that no longer makes it render. Can this be fixed? Regards SoWhy 09:02, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

The thumbnailer doesn't like images with more than 100M pixels. I presume it used to be less restrictive, or we would have noticed. I've uploaded a smaller version which seems to have fixed it for the moment. If anyone has a better fix, please revert my change. Andy Dingley (talk) 10:33, 14 September 2021 (UTC)
Best fix would probably be to convert to SVG but that has been requested for six years now. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to do that. Thanks for the fix. Weirdly enough, it now shows the thumbnails for the bigger versions as well... Regards SoWhy 08:29, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
Max size on the thumbnailer is configurable, someone may have re-adjusted it back up again (but not noticed this thread).
Would SVG help? You'd have to embed the font and have that accessible to whatever was going to render it as a bitmap. On the whole, I think a pre-rendered bitmap of the largest size we can manage is probably more robust. Andy Dingley (talk) 11:40, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
@SoWhy, Andy Dingley: You're right, I didn't see this thread (I caught the one on COM:VPT though). That was phab:T291010, a side effect of trying to remove an extension thought to be unused. That change was reverted and everything should be back to normal.
As for SVG, you wouldn't be able to embed the font in the file. Only the freely-licensed fonts at m:SVG fonts can be used for security and copyright reasons. Also (but different)
Hi, the problem here is the same with both. They're old photos, you want to upload them. The descriptive metadata on their uploads isn't right, because I know the Commons upload tool is confusing to use. Sorry about that.
To be here, they need to be "freely licensed". See COM:LICENSING. That's an absolute.
This can happen in one of two ways (or both). Either the image is so old that it enters the "public domain" and no-one still holds copyright to it. That takes a _long_ time. It also varies by nation.
Secondly, the owner of the rights to this image can choose to release the image under a free licence. They still own the copyright, they just allow others to use it.
There's a (bad) problem on Commons in that when mistakes happen (and first uploads for new users are a nightmare, our system is very unfriendly) the reaction of some established editors and admins here is now to see that user as "the enemy" and so reasons must be found as to why their uploads can be deleted and their account banned, as soon as possible. This is what happens to many users here. We even have a policy that editors must not do this (COM:AGF), but that's ignored.
The date and source fields of the image description need to be changed. At present, the Commons uploader has set these as you having created the images just now. Obviously that's wrong. The real values might be something like "Circa 1930s" or "Pre 1941", as best you can, and "Unknown commercial photographer" or "Family snapshot".
Now we look at the licensing issue. Are they public domain by age? They might be. Some jurisdictions would permit that anything which (as here) has strong evidence to be >80 years old and produced by an unknown photographer is now PD. Commons has a blanket rule for this at 120 years. Sadly there is a problem. The "hostile editors" problem now kicks in. Having once (innocently) described these as "own work", there are editors here who will now no longer ever allow you to make any more correct statement, and would rather see you banned and these images deleted. That is a disgrace, but sadly that's endemic on Wikimedia. So "good faith" on accepting things like PD claims for old photos is in very short supply.
There is also an argument that if the rights are held by the family, you have inherited them, and you are at liberty to now issue a free licence, such as the {{CC-by-sa}} you have used. This would be your choice. If they're PD, then you can still do this, but it would mean little.
Please update the source, then let's talk further. Andy Dingley (talk) 12:57, 14 September 2021 (UTC)
Also, if you really mean that you intend to place those for which you have inherited rights into the public domain (meaning no need even to acknowledge who they came from) that would be {{Cc-0-heirs}}. If, however, you want a credit line, that would be {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}. - Jmabel ! talk 15:07, 14 September 2021 (UTC)
Good job demonstrating how to ignore COM:AGF. I personally find when my introduction to a forum or group is someone saying that the established users here are assholes, I don't think better of the person telling me that or of that forum or group, and don't feel like talking further.
We have a high copyright standard. I can not tell you how many times I've been dealing with a user who uploaded works as "own work" who then proceeds to make it clear they will tell whatever story means that Commons will keep the file. You could assume good faith, and try and understand that copyright matters for some of us.
No, the fact that he does not know the photographer does not mean that the photographer is unknown. The legal standard in some cases can be incredibly high, and certainly many photographs are properly labeled when published and then copied and copied without proper attribution.--Prosfilaes (talk) 02:16, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
  • If you think that the right response to finding an inexperienced user confused about uploads and copyright, and a few images with no evident problems in that respect, is then to trawl back over all their uploads for several years (which no one has ever raised as a problem before) and then tag the whole lot for speedy deletion without even any attempt at discussion with them – then you're part of the same problem.
We're lucky here in that the uploader is still around to respond. Usually this is how collections get wiped out altogether, because they're a few years old and the uploader is no longer watching out. Andy Dingley (talk) 11:37, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
  • Again, when I start posting to a forum, I don't tend to continue if Andy Dingley starts explaining to me about how everyone around here is jerks. Double if he doesn't seem to be listening to them, as I never said anything about speedy deletion.
Collections get wiped out because they have unclear copyright status and nobody is around to clarify the copyright status. Nobody has ever raised those files as a problem before, because nobody is looking at new uploads, in part because it's a pretty unthankful job. What do you want us to do about that? If it's ignore copyright status, make a policy proposal, don't abuse people just trying to do work around here.--Prosfilaes (talk) 19:41, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

Right to use[edit]

Dear Sir, Dear Madam,

I am currently writing a text book on Relativity, and I would like very much to use one picture I saw on Wikipedia:

It is an illustration of apsidal precession. [Mpfiz]

It shows Mercury's perihelion precession.

My future book is a text book for science students, to be sold worldwide. Am I authorized me to include this picture in my future text book? If not, How should I proceed to obtain this authorization?

I remain at your disposal if you have any question.

Best regards,

Paul Bruma —Preceding unsigned comment was added by (talk) 14:16, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

  • Could you please link the image on Wikipedia (or here on Commons) that you are talking about? Otherwise, no one has any chance of telling you anything you don't already know. - Jmabel ! talk 15:20, 14 September 2021 (UTC)
  • Presumably File:Perihelion precession.svg
It is a key part of Wikimedia Commons that we don't need to have this conversation. Everything here is not only available under a free licence, but it's also described in such a way that you can use that free licence just by looking at its description page, you never need to ask first.
Looking at the licensing for it, it's an own work by the uploader and they have licensed it as {{PD-self}}, meaning they wish to place it completely into the public domain. That means you can do anything with it.
However it's also polite to (where possible) treat this more like a {{CC-by}} licence and to also credit the author, in this case as Mpfiz @ Wikimedia Commons or just "Mpfiz @ Wikimedia Commons" on paper. Andy Dingley (talk) 16:27, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

Need help renaming a file[edit]

I made a slight spelling error while uploading this file, but my request for renaming has not been responded to. Please fix it. Best, Inimesh (talk) 01:47, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

@Inimesh: that plaque must not be very old; is there any reason to believe it’s not under copyright?—Odysseus1479 (talk) 02:10, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
@Odysseus1479: As far as I can tell, there were no photo restrictions in the Qutub Minar complex, unlike some other places in Delhi. I saw other information boards that have been uploaded to Commons, and thus followed suit. According to this website, India's freedom of panorama provisions allow "the making or publishing of a painting, drawing, engraving or photograph of a sculpture, or other artistic work, any other work of artistic craftsmanship, if such work is permanently situated in a public place or any premises to which the public has access". Inimesh (talk) 01:58, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
FoP does not generally apply to 2-D works, and I’ve seen many similar items from other Commonwealth countries deleted on that basis. Photo restrictions imposed by museums &c. are not related to copyright, so their absence makes no difference. But my concern is more about the text itself as a piece of writing (there‘s next to no creative expression in the design anyway), which is more than a few words and obviously the main subject of the photo.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 06:10, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
@Odysseus1479: So the question seems to boil down to whether this plaque, because it contains a fairly long passage of text, qualifies as a literary work. For one thing, no authorship or copyright information is present on the object. Also, with regard to plaques, Commons:Freedom_of_panorama says the following: "Sometimes, a literary work is a part of a building or sculpture or is presented on a publicly accessible plaque. In most jurisdictions, the literary work has a separate copyright which must be considered separately unless it is an integral part of the building or sculpture. A plaque describing the building or sculpture will not qualify unless the work is in one of the eleven jurisdictions which include an exception for literary works." Inimesh (talk) 07:24, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
It is a literary work. Authorship information is not needed for that, and copyright information has never been needed in modern India. I don't understand your point in quoting the FoP page; all it says that the literary work had a separate copyright and doesn't generally fall under FoP. Below, there's a table showing for all nations whether they have FoP for text, and India has a red x in that box.--Prosfilaes (talk) 00:20, 18 September 2021 (UTC)

Uploading files from other sites[edit]

Hi! I'm new here. I just wanna know if uploading a photo from other sites are illegal — Preceding unsigned comment added by IMjustANormalPerson (talk • contribs) 02:41, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

  • @IMjustANormalPerson: Most of what you find on the Internet does not belong on Commons because of copyright reasons. (Of course scope is an additional issue.) We accept only content that is in the public domain or (per COM:L) has a license that is free enough to allow both commercial re-use and derivative works. I suggest that you start by getting familiar with both of those concepts before you try uploading any image that you did not create yourself. - Jmabel ! talk 15:57, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

Unsure About Copyright[edit]

So, I took a screenshot of a piece of work created in the Medieval Ages and now inside the British Library and cropped it down to a specific illumination. There are many pictures from the same work posted in the Public Domain on Wikipedia Commons. Do I put this work as my own and who do I make the authors? Thanks! --TheREALSlavicElmo (talk) 03:14, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

@TheREALSlavicElmo: If the original work is really medieval (some countries have longer copyright protection, and the period may count down from the year the author died), then it is technically OK for your screenshot to be uploaded to here; although in most cases, a scan is preferred. Please use this template: {{PD-scan|1=PD-old-assumed|country=<Country code>}} when UploadWizard asks what copyright template should be used. Please apply {{Scan}} for the source, and author the original author, or use {{Unknown author}} to denote an unknown author, thanks!廣九直通車 (talk) 11:24, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
@廣九直通車: Thank you for your response, but I do have another question; how do I scan it? If it helps, the object is from the Genealogical Roll of the English Kings. My edit keeps getting thrown out. In NEW YORK STATE, in AMERICA there was NEVER a “NEWGATE” prison. NEWGATE was in ENGLAND. In fact, they sent people BACK to England to NEWGATE. In AMERICA, AUBURN PRISON IS THE FIRST PRISON BUILT IN THE UNITED STATED. NEW GATE WAS NEVER IN THE UNITED STATES. Please edit that back with me as the editor of possible. Additionally, as convicts, we call Copper John, COPPER JANE since removing the “bulge”. Although the article does NOT mention this, I wanted to add that in as well as the name for the electric chair “SPARKY”, although after my first edit was changed back, I’m not sure it would get changed because people act as if they know this information for fact and changed it back…they have wrong information and are transferring it to Wikipedia, which is why people don’t like using Wikipedia…because people edit specifically to create disinformation. I found an image with copyright violation[edit]

I would like to report that this Wiki common image violates copyright. There are so many result when searching similar images in Google (i.e. 600+ results). How to reincorporate encrypted image dynamics over multiple virtual interface platforms[edit]

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to upload some photographs directly from my website and it seems I am having trouble with the de-encryption/re-encryption process within the nested virtual desktop I am using. Has anyone else had this problem? My next thought is to try adjusting my adaptive router configurations. I’ve tried eliminating my firewall bypass and manually tweaking the relay parameters, which doesn’t seem to resolve the issue. I know that I could of course screen grab the images and import them that way, but I want to preserve image quality. Thanks! Butftucker (talk) 01:34, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

@Butftucker: I'm pretty sure you've just written a bunch of meaningless technobabble here. If you're trying to upload an image directly from a website to Commons, presumably using Special:Upload, it really doesn't matter how your firewall is configured or how many virtual machines you're nesting, as your web server should just be talking directly to Commons. Apologies if I've misunderstood you; please try to clarify your use case with less jargon if that is the case. – BMacZero (🗩) 05:43, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

  • Sorry, but these licences are irrevocable.
You can stop offering these through Flickr any more under that licence, where they're from your account and under your control.
But what you can't do is control what happens if someone else has used that licence, and is hosting them and offering them correctly, under the terms of the licence they obtained them under. We have to do this, or else the whole licensing model fails. Andy Dingley (talk) 12:12, 18 September 2021 (UTC)

How to nominate pornographic content for deletion[edit]

Hello all, I would like to nominate some purely pornographic images on commons for deletion. Can someone please tell me how I can go about doing this? Thank you Сцитяаре (talk) 17:17, 18 September 2021 (UTC)

  • See Commons:Deletion requests for nominating images for deletion. As it's unclear what you mean by "purely pornographic images", note that human nudity and human sexuality are considered within project scope when they can reasonably be used in educational/artistic contexts; see Commons:Project scope. As Wikimedia's founder noted, "mere nudity is not pornography" -- Jimbo Wales [1]. Images like poorly photographed penis selfies, on the other hand, are generally considered not to have in-project scope usefulness as redundant and are generally deleted. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 17:52, 18 September 2021 (UTC)

The RNLI Wikipedia Page[edit]

There is an image of the Atlantic 21 Lifeboat, on the RNLI page, as this is a boat that is no longer being used, I believe that the image should be updated to one of the current boats being operated by the RNLI. However I don't know whether to update the image or not, and if I take an image from the internet, will it be in violation of copyright?

Thanks Endellelverdam (talk) 18:41, 18 September 2021 (UTC)

Make an image yourself or use one of Category:Atlantic 21 class lifeboats. --Stunteltje (talk) 19:13, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
